After a disappointing road trip where they went 1-5, the 36-38 St. Louis Cardinals will be glad to get back home to Busch Stadium tonight when they open a 4-game set with the 26-46 Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals’ offense has been lethargic to say the least but if they are going to snap out of it it should be tonight. St. Louis has won all 5 meetings with Pittsburgh this year, outscoring them 35-15. The expected starters for tonight’s game have both been struggling. The Pirates’ Chad Kuhl is 1-4 with a 5.66 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, and the Bucs are 0-5 in his last 5 starts against a team with a losing record. The Cardinals expected starter, Carlos MartÃnez, is 3-8 with a 6.62 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP, however in his last turn against the Pirates on May 2nd he delivered, tossing 8 scoreless innings, resulting in a 3-0 Cardinals win. St. Louis has dominated Pittsburgh in recent years, going 36-15 in their last 51 meetings, and that dominance should continue tonight.
